History of the Battle of Arnhem

On 19 September 1944 supply aircraft Stirling LJ-647 of 570 Squadron RAF was badly damaged by flak over the DZ near Arnhem, and crash-landed in a field near Groene Dijk at Haren. The crew, consisting of P/O E.D. Hincks (Pilot), F/Sgt R.L. Huckfield (Navigator), F/Sgt H. Fletcher (Air Bomber), F/Sgt J.P. Smith (Wireless Operator), Sgt. K.E. Johnston (Air Gunner) and Sgt C. Baker (Flight Engineer), together with the air despatchers L/Cpl. L. Grantham and Dvr G. Gamgee, all returned to base via Brussels.

Shortly before he died Denis Hincks gave permission to publish his story of September 1944 on this website. If you want to read it, click here.
