Wings of Freedom
When the battle for the Arnhem bridges was lost in September 1944, a legend was born. The fighting of the British en Polish airborne soldiers would overshadow all other parts of the Market Garden operation.
The United States Army Air Force troop carriers which transported all paratroopers, except for a small detachment of the British, and towed all US gliders to the battle zone, remained under exposed in publications.
This book, written by Hans den Brok, is the first about the American Douglas C-47 losses in the Market Garden operation. It tells the stories of the men who flew the aircraft, and dropped paratroopers or towed gliders. Nearly 80 of these C-47s failed to get back to England, and were lost over the Continent. Many airmen evaded capture with the brave help of Belgian and Dutch civilians. Some paid the highest price for their help. Over one hundred crew members died.
Wings of Freedom is the result of the searching for answers to the questions that were raised by the author.
Where did a plane crash? What happened to the crew? Who were those men? Where did they stay?
Ten years of intensive investigations resulted in this book. It counts over 350 pages, and includes about 380 photos, many of which were never published before.
